Motor Mate app designed with MyDrive Solutions

Confused.com has launched a smartphone app that aims to increase interest in telematics by rewarding good driving with cash.

The Motor Mate app gives young drivers a score based on their driving style. After drivers have completed 250 miles using the app, Confused.com will pay them £25, with a £25 discount if a driver buys motor insurance through the aggregator.

Confused.com hopes that the app will encourage safer driving. It was developed with broker MyDrive Solutions and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

Confused.com head of emerging products Joanne Garcia said: “As well as helping drivers become safer drivers, the Confused.com MotorMate app allows customers to try the telematics experience before having to commit.”

MyDrive chief executive Linden Holliday said: “The app we have developed with Confused.com monitors driver performance and helps them become safer by providing specific and individual advice. The system works by monitoring the phone’s GPS each second, continuously checking for smooth and careful driving. By helping drivers become safer, Confused and MyDrive can help lower the cost of car insurance for these drivers.”
