Alarming news reached Backchat this week about Peter Hubbard's charity bike ride from Land's End to John O'Groats.

It seems that Layton Blackham boss Chris Blackham, who was also one of the team that completed the entire ride, had a night to forget during the epic journey.

After staying in a few travel hotels, the cycling entourage rolled up at the Helmsdale YMCA for a night. Initially cheered by the bargain price of £9.80 per person, Blackham and Hubbard were shocked to find that the sleeping accommodation was one massive hall divided into two (male and female) replete with more bunks than a POW camp.

"The only way we could get to our bunks down the aisles was by squeezing sideways," said Hubbard. And the cosiness didn't stop there. Blackham and Hubbard shared a bunk with Blackham on the top deck. But this was not your ordinary bunk. No. "There wasn't even room to sit up straight," said Hubbard.
