NFU Mutual sees claims rise from 145 to 182 in 2008

Rural insurer NFU Mutual received 182 claims from farmers for sheep attacked by domestic dogs in 2008, up from 145 in 2007, with claims topping £1m, Farmers Guardian reports.

NFU Mutual said the number could be significantly higher with farmers not making claims.

The majority of the attacks were caused by stray dogs in packs on urban fringes. Other attacks were caused by walkers letting their dogs off the lead.
