Sheffield, Derbyshire and parts of North Wales under water

Flash floods hit the north of England and Wales, leaving schools closed, roads blocked and people needing to be rescued, the BBC reports.

Flooding problems

  • 11 factory workers rescued in Dronfield, north Derbyshire
  • Sheffield's transport system disrupted and parts of the supertram suspended. Two schools and City College closed. Bus depot affected. Library shut
  • Railway line between Chesterfield and Sheffield closed
  • South Yorkshire Fire Service (SYfire) received more than a dozen flood calls within half an hour
  • Workers stuck in office blocks in Newtown, Powys

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Fire Service said the situation was not as serious as the flooding which hit Sheffield two years ago.
