'Still a long way to go,' says ABI's Haddrill

The government must not allow floods to slip down the agenda, ABI director general Stephen Haddrill warned at a parliamentary reception this week.

Haddrill welcomed the introduction of the Flood and Water Management Bill last week, but said there was still a long way to go.

ABI proposals for the bill include creating strong national leadership and targets to reduce flood risk; establishing new powers and responsibilities to tackle surface water flooding; promoting community action to reduce flood risk; and modernising the approach to flood risk management.

Addressing the reception on Tuesday, Huw Irranca-Davies, minister for the natural and marine environment, praised the insurance industry’s contribution to managing the 2007 floods and pledged to continue working with the ABI and other parties on managing floods.
