France’s Michel Barnier to be in charge of capital rules

Michel Barnier, the former French foreign minister, is to be in charge of the capital rules for insurers, the FT reports

France secured the post of internal market commissioner for Barnier as part of a deal that saw the UK’s Lady Ashton become Europe's foreign policy chief.

French diplomats insist Barnier will have control over all aspects of the single market, the FT said. These include new capital rules for insurers.
