The cost of car insurance has doubled over the last nine years, according to the latest AA British Insurance Premium Index.

Over the quarter home insurance premiums rose by just 0.22%for buildings and 0.39% for contents cover. Over the past year, average premiums have increased by 1.77% for buildings and 2.09% for contents.

Andrew Briscoe, managing director of AA Insurance Services, said: "In real terms, the cost of home insurance is at its lowest level for many years despite the effects of the 2001 storms and a number of localised severe weather events over the past couple of years.

"However, there is evidence to show that the claims costs resulting from these will force up home premiums from next quarter."
