Guidance on preventing slip and trip accidents in schools, colleges and universities has been published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The free information sheet Preventing Slip and Trip Incidents in the Education Sector advises on areas such as: appropriate flooring, dealing with spillages and lighting.

Last year there were more than 4,000 injuries to members of the public and employees caused by slipping and tripping incidents at British educational institutions.

HSE head of services sector John Cullen said that slip and trip injuries were not always taken seriously with the result that there has been "poor management control". He added that they could be prevented or controlled "often simply and at low cost".

The guidance has been welcomed by public sector insurer Zurich Municipal.
