Olly Laughton-Scott’s talk to be based on Insurance Times Top 50 Brokers

IMAS founding partner Olly Laughton-Scott will chart 10 years of broker mergers and acquisitions (M&A) at a Lloyd’s lecture next Tuesday.

The talk, titled ‘The impact of Broker M&A – 2004 to 2013, and the next ten years’ will be based on the Insurance Times Top 50 Brokers, for which IMAS has supplied the data and analysis for the past 10 years.

The lecture is hosted by the Insurance Institute of London (IIL) and the Chartered Insurance Institute, and will take place in the Old Library at Lloyd’s.

Laughton-Scott’s lecture will reveal interesting trends about broker M&A over the past 10 years based on the annual Top 50 Brokers ranking.

For example, more than 50% of the firms that appeared in the 2003 edition of the Top 50 Brokers have been sold and no longer appear.

Also, brokers now need to be bigger to make it into the Top 50. The entry point has risen to £14m commission from £10m over the past 10 years.

The lecture will also chart the future for brokers. In the four months since the 2013 edition of the Top 50 Brokers was published, the level of M&A activity has increased “significantly” according to Laughton-Scott.

The talk will be chaired by Miller chief executive and IIL president Graham Clarke.
