Cuomo makes new claims handling rules

Superstorm Sandy

New York governor Andrew Cuomo has forced insurers to speed up handling Superstorm Sandy claims.

Cuomo has made a new rule that adjusters should respond to a claim within six days, down from the original 15-day timeframe.

The governor said he brought in the new measures after New York residents complained that loss adjusters were slow to respond to the effects of the storm.

Cuomo also wants the New York state insurance regulator to rate and publish the performance of each insurer dealing with Sandy claims.
