Continued freezing temperatures will add to insurers’ costs

Lloyds TSB Insurance has already seen a 15% increase in burst pipe claims and expects this figure to rise further as the Met Office warned freezing temperatures would continue.

The insurer said claims cost an average of £1,400 with one recent claim costing £40,000.

Phil Loney, managing director, said: “After last year’s comparatively mild winter, it’s no surprise that so many homeowners have been caught unprepared by the cold snap.

The Met Office had three severe weather warning in place this morning.

Freezing rain was forecast in Highlands and Eilean Siar and in Grampian, with London and South East England warned of widespread icy roads.

The Met Office’s cold weather alert warning system remains at red.
