The insurance industry has been urged to take a lead role in the battle against global terrorism.

Rohan Gunaratna, speaking at the terrorism risks conference in Singapore warned that Al-Qaeda units were increasing their activity across the globe.

Outlining a two-pronged method of dealing with the threat, Gunaratna said insurers must work more closely with governments, particularly in Asia, to raise public awareness of the issue.

Secondly, he called on the industry to extend coverage so that commerce and industry is allowed to continue as normal after an attack.

Gunaratna also called on the wider financial community to avoid dealing with suspected terrorist groups.
