Legal & General is about to launch into the health cash plan market.

The company has developed its Essentials Cash product to be marketed through its corporate partners and affinity groups. The first products will go on sale to fans of Birmingham City FC.

The cash plan is aimed at 18- to 65-year-olds, with children under 18 automatically covered in individual or family policies. There are three cover levels offering higher cash sums.

In addition to hospital payments, the policy pays out for optical care, including eye tests, glasses and contact lenses, dental care, specialist consultation and X-rays. It will also pay £150, £225 or £300, depending on the cover chosen, towards the cost of physiotherapy, osteopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic, reflexology, homeopathy and chiropody.

Monthly premiums begin at £11.50 for a single adult and rise to £37 for a family choosing level three cover. Customers must have taken out the policy for three months before claiming.

L&G said the cash plan was just the beginning and that more new policies would be rolled out “as time goes by”.
