Markel and Limit will increase their UK professional indemnity (PI) capacities in 2004.

A Markel spokeswoman confirmed this week that the insurer will offer an extra £22m in capacity for UK PI this year.

In 2003, Markel wrote around £110m of UK PI business, but the insurer said it aimed to boost this by up to 20% in 2004.

Lloyd's managing agent Limit will increase its UK PI capacity by £12m in 2004.

A Limit spokesman confirmed this week that the insurer would write £92m of UK PI business this year.

This represents a 15% increase on the 2003 total of £80m.

Most of the business will be written by Syndicate 386, though a small amount will be written by Syndicate 2000.

Last week, Creechurch confirmed that it would boost its PI capacity by 40% in 2004.

The insurer will write around £12m of PI business in 2004, compared to £7.5m in 2003. The business will be written by syndicates 1607 and 2962.
