Lloyd's insurer DA Constable is launching a product aimed at small and medium sized design and build contractors.

It claimed that this is the first time such a product will be available for all but the largest contractors.

The insurer said the policy solves many of the problems faced by contractors in seeking to provide indemnity for professional activities undertaken outside of a consulting environment, where contracts and common law liabilities are more onerous for contractors.

David Harries, leader of the syndicate's professional indemnity team, said: “The trend over the last 20 years in the UK construction industry to move towards ‘design and build' projects has led to an unsatisfactory situation regarding PI insurance.

"The market has sought to deal with this issue by treating the in-house design teams of building contractors as if they are consultants supplying a service.

“Our new policy rectifies this flaw and recognises the fact that the construction industry has changed and that contractors do so much more than just build things."

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
