Ben McBean, assistant claims manager in the QBE EO claims special investigation unit, explains why his firm deserves to win the Excellence in Fraud Mitigation award
Why did you put yourselves forward for the category?

We recognise that insurance fraud is constantly evolving and tackling it requires an organisation-wide commitment to awareness, prevention and collaboration. QBE’s approach demonstrates how insurers can adapt to an increasingly complex fraud landscape. Fraud prevention requires constant evolution and by combining industry-leading expertise with technology, we’ve invested in a strategy in line with this.
Our programme is underpinned by a sophisticated, intelligence-led Special Investigations Unit (SIU) that tackles complex and organised fraud through advanced analytics, forensic investigation, network analysis and cross-industry intelligence sharing.
What do you think makes your entry stand out and why should you win the award?
At QBE we’ve embedded fraud awareness into claims operations, rather than relying solely on our specialist fraud teams. Our colleagues identify and challenge fraud as part of their everyday role through specialist training. This breaks down traditional silos for the benefit of our customers.
We’ve also combined multilingual education, intelligence-led investigation and practical detection tools across our Europe operations in a bid to better protect our customers and the wider insurance market. Rather than attempting to replace expertise with technology, we have used technology to enhance it, making fraud knowledge more accessible, scalable and consistent across our European operations.
What would winning this award mean to you and your firm?
Winning this award would recognise QBE’s commitment to combating insurance fraud and spotlight the expertise within our SIU and wider claims teams. Acknowledging our collaborative approach to fraud prevention will hopefully encourage our peers to work together more closely to combat this issue, to reassure our customers and the broader insurance industry that we are working tirelessly to combat this issue, and we reinforce this commitment through continued investment in innovative and effective fraud prevention methods.
