Insurance Times has carefully adjusted the Top 50 this year to ensure that only general insurance premiums relating to the UK market are ranked, giving a true domestic picture.

Some interesting developments include Admiral, despite being heavily reinsured, now nearly writing half a billion of its own business.

Beazley is also doing well, closing in on nearly £1bn in net written premium.

Zurich is not included due to the nature of its regulatory filings.

Top 50 editor Matt Scott said: ”I am delighted to present to you the 2018 edition of the Insurance Times Top 50 Insurers, bringing you the most comprehensive ranking of general insurers in the U.K.

”As usual, we have painstakingly gone through the regulatory filings of all the main players in the market to find out who’s the biggest and who’s climbing up the table. All of these results have also been consolidated at group level, making the Insurance Times Top 50 Insurers the only benchmarking report to bring you this level of detail.

”This year has also introduced a new methodology for our ranking system, making sure that insurers are ranked by the general insurance premiums relating to the U.K. market only, to give you a truer sense of scale in your domestic marketplace.”
