Norwich Union (NU) is to axe two call centres as part of wider plans to cut 1,700 jobs.

210 posts will go at Darlington by April and another 120 will be lost at Morecambe in November this year as NU merges its business with that of the RAC motoring group.

The latest announcement of job losses caused confrontation with Amicus union which said it had not been consulted and staff were "shocked".

But Aviva, which owns NU, said both workers and Amicus had been made aware that a review was taking place.
