The London Climate Change Partnership has launched a report that makes recommendations for how London can prepare for what it calls "unavoidable climate change".

The report, "Adapting to climate change: Lessons for London", looks at 18 cities to understand how they are addressing the issues that London looks set to face.

These include:

  • flooding
  • high temperatures
  • limited water resources

The report details specific findings and notes the "common threads" that link its findings, including:

  • There is a need for city-wide planning.
  • Retrofit of climate adaptation measures to existing buildings, infrastructure and systems presents an enormous challenge for London and mechanisms to do so need to be implemented immediately.
  • The opportunities for "climate-proofing" new development are easier to realise, and must be driven through the planning process.
