Abuse by coaches left uncovered after insurer legal fight

Swim Ireland has no insurance cover for the sexual-abuse crimes committed by national coach Ger Doyle, who was jailed last month, after losing a High Court action against RSA, the Times reports.

Swim Ireland’s insurance cover collapsed when Royal Sun Alliance, its previous insurer, denied liability in High Court compensation proceedings involving 15 former swimmers abused by Derry O’Rourke, after he received concurrent jail sentences in 1998 totalling more than 100 years.

RSA argued that the period of the abuse was not covered and that the swimming association had not notified it promptly.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
