A significant increase in subsidence claims has been recorded by engineers in London and the south-east.
Clancy Consulting said it had witnessed a significant increase in domestic subsidence claims.
It added: "The incidence of drought shock that is now apparent with many trees dropping their leaves indicates that they have exhausted the moisture within the subsoil and therefore, for shrinkable soils, desiccation is inevitable".
