Somali piracy attacks could be copied across the world, pushing up premiums against piracy, Munich Re has warned. Dieter Berg, the company’s head of marine insurance, said the “business model” used by the pirates could become popular elsewhere. “Instead of hijacking ships to steal equipment and cargo, they are now holding the crew, cargo and ship for ransom fees. We certainly have to watch what is going on carefully.”
