Gavin Bruce-Smythe promoted at XL

XL Insurance has promoted Gavin Bruce-Smythe to chief underwriting officer for its international property and casualty business.

Bruce-Smythe was previously XL chief underwriting officer of excess casualty international.

His new responsibilities will include overseeing underwriting across XL Insurance's property and casualty operations outside of North America. He will report to XL Insurance's international P&C chief executive Eileen McCusker.

McCusker said: "We believe a CUO function across different lines of business is vital in providing a fully integrated approach for clients and brokers, and Gavin, with his extensive market and underwriting experience as well as proven track record in understanding emerging trends and risk management needs, is best suited to this central role."

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
