Company history:
Skandia Insurance Company, the parent company, was established as a mutual fund in 1855 and quickly established itself as a major international player. By 1900 the company was already active in the U.S. market, and in the 1950s it branched out into Latin America, arriving in Japan around 1970.
Structurally the company is divided into a mutual element, Skandia Life Insurance Company Ltd, and a privately-owned division whose shares are listed on the Stockholm, Copenhagen and London stock exchanges. The group markets a wide range of products in the direct insurance and reinsurance segments, as well as in the savings segment - for individuals, businesses and the public sector.
Since 1998 it has been actively developing its activities in the United States, which is by far its largest market in the life assurance sector.
