Up to 7,000 cars damaged in four days

Ice and snow over the weekend led to thousands of accidents, with AA Insurance saying that up to £3.5m of damage has been caused in four days.

The insurer has slammed drivers who don’t bother to properly clear their cars, describing them as “accidents waiting to happen”.

Between 18 and 21 January, AA Insurance received more than 500 claims, of which more than 45% were related to snow and ice. On Monday, half of all claims were weather related.

AA Insurance director Simon Douglas said: “Driving on ice or packed snow demands great care.  And where snow has melted, leaving a wet surface, there is a risk of black ice which can catch drivers by surprise.

“Most parts of the UK rarely see prolonged snow so it’s not surprising that many drivers don’t cope well.”

The AA also warned drivers of the importance of maintaining good visibility when driving, saying that many drivers are not taking care to clear snowbound cars.

“People who drive around in cars that could be mistaken for an igloo are accidents waiting to happen,” Douglas said.
