CNA was founded in 1897, with headquarters based in Chicago, Illinois.

The company is now one of the largest insurance companies in the US with assets in excess of $60bn and global revenues in excess of $12bn. It is also among the world's largest writers of property and casualty insurance.

Globally, CNA provides businesses and individuals with a broad range of insurance products and risk management services.

In Europe, CNA is recognised as a leading insurer of specialist risks and a provider of innovative products, distributed through offices in the UK, France, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and, increasingly, across borders into the wider European Union.

Biography:

Davies, chief executive of CNA Insurance, has been involved in international business activities for nearly 30 years and the insurance industry in particular for the last ten years. In the early 1970s, he was an economist with Lloyds Bank International, specialising in Latin America and Europe.

Admitted in 1976, Davies was with City law firm Lovell White Durrant before establishing his own practice in Paris and Brussels. To this he brought clients such as Mars, Boeing, SmithKline Beecham, Bacardi, Ernst & Whinney and British Airways.

In 1989, he was made the international partner for the City law firm, Lawrence Graham.
