Fire ripped through a plastics factory in Portsmouth, leading to the evacuation of a nearby Sainsbury's store and Hilton hotel this week.

The blaze, which broke out just after 9.30am, created a huge pall of black smoke rising some 300ft into the air, and resulted in temporary closure of the M27 and local roads.

Once firefighters had the fire under control, it was time to start assessing the damage.

McLarens Toplis was appointed to handle the loss, which is expected to exceed £5m.

Spaform plastics factory makes acrylic baths and other plastic items.

The building stored acrylics, plastic resin and fibreglass as well as gas tanks.

Spaform hopes to be trading from alternative premises shortly.
