Fortis is in the midst of building an electronic system that can be used to immediately settle some travel insurance claims.

The technology, built by the insurer’s IT team and costing approximately £600,000, received board approval last year and will be up and running by early next year, said John Baker, head of household and travel claims.

Baker said: “The market place is always changing and unless we change with it, we’ll be left behind. We don’t buy our technology off the shelves.”

Baker said the system will allow clients, in cases such as flight delays and cancellations, to have their travel claims settled instantly, while significantly reducing administration costs and unnecessary paper trails.

Previously customers would have to contact the airline and request confirmation of flight delays that would then be mailed to the insurance company.
