The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) has paid £16.5m to former Independent Insurance policyholders suffering hardship following the insurer's collapse.
The figure is a significant increase on the £2.3m paid out by September last year.
The FSCS said that the £16.5m had been paid to 652 policyholders.
