Arthur J Gallagher has combined its recently acquired social housing brokers Farr and Acumus under the Arthur J Gallagher umbrella.

The 55-strong division, named Arthur J Gallagher Housing, is headed by Joe Murphy, who was managing director of Farr Insurance Brokers when it was bought from Barbon in May.

Arthur J Gallagher Housing’s clients include over 250 housing associations, representing more than 40% of social housing homes in England and Scotland and over 75% in Wales.

Murphy said the combination of Farr and Acumus would give clients access to more competitive rates and improved risk mitigation through upgraded data collection and market intelligence.

“It made sense to combine forces and create something we think is bigger than the sum of its parts,” he told Insurance Times.

“Having access to more property markets is particularly important. Many insurers don’t have an appetite for social housing but because we’ve got so much data and insight we’re able to demonstrate it’s a profitable return.

It will also advise clients on risk reduction and how to defend liability claims.

Gallagher bought housing association specialist Acumus last September.

The broking giant recently revealed plans to rename its divisions under the Arthur J Gallagher banner.

“I think having ‘housing’ in the name does help to indicate the area we’re talking about, but it’s more the relationships we’ve got stretching back years that will underpin the success it the future. Clients know they’ll get the same level of great service and the people they like to deal with.

“Big is beautiful only if what we’re delivering meets the needs of our clients,” Murphy added.
