General Electric is considering spinning off its Employers Reinsurance (ERC) unit, it was reported today.

It is believed the company would consider an initial public offering of up to 20% of the unit, and that it may even consider selling the company outright if a single buyer could be found. It is currently deciding how to proceed.

This move would form part of GE's strategy of seeking to reduce its exposure to unprofitable lines of property and casualty business since the World Trade Centre events.
