Health insurer Unum has welcomed a government promise to regularly review the status of people claiming incapacity and disability benefits.

Pensions and work minister Alistair Darling has announced plans to limit new disability claimants' benefits to an initial three-year period, after which they would have to attend a medical review.

The insurer believes up to 250,000 disabled people could be helped to return to work by the government measure.

Unum said disabled people should receive rehabilitation support to encourage employers to hire them.
