Specialist insurer Hiscox has launched a free, electronic contents calculator to help brokers value their clients' household contents correctly.
Hiscox said research showed three in five UK households were underinsured when it came to household contents cover, mainly because people forget the cost of their everyday basics when adding up their contents value.
Hiscox high net worth insurance specialist Austyn Tusler said: "We realise that people don't want to spend ages analysing what their home contents are worth, but thinking it through carefully could make an enormous difference if you have a fire and have to start again.
"We've made this easier for brokers and clients by devising an electronic contents calculator which doesn't require every individual item to be categorised but does prompt people to think about hidden value such as clothes and shoes.
"By working through our calculator, brokers can reassure their clients that if the worst happens, they won't literally be caught without their trousers."
