The cold weather forecast this week could lead to one in twelve households making a claim on their home insurance policy.

ASDA is warning that up to one in twelve households may need to make a claim on their home insurance policy due to the cold weather expected. Weather forecasters predict heavy snow will hit many areas of the country.

Collapsed ceilings and ruined wall and floor coverings may result if pipes freeze as a result of the cold weather. Heavy snowfall can also cause problems such as glass and roof damage.

While some policies will cover the damage caused by leaks, but not the cracked pipes themselves, home owners could find themselves having to fork out for the plumbing. Also it's not just old properties that are most vulnerable - many new ones will also be unable to tolerate the extreme weather conditions expected over the next week.

ASDA director of financial services David Rutley said: "A quick check around the home, especially in the loft, is essential at this time of year, as is checking your insurance policy and reminding yourself of the steps to take if the worst happens. Our experience shows that many thousands of households may need to make a claim in the next couple of weeks. Following our simple steps can help to reduce the risks the cold snap brings."
