Howden, the Lloyd’s broker specialising in business critical insurance, is building a team in London to extend its international reach and capabilities in medical malpractice.

The company will provide both wholesale and retail services through Howden’s international offices.

Virginio Mercurio will lead the team as director.

He joins the London office from Howden’s Spanish operation, where he was previously a director responsible for consolidating the reinsurance book and establishing a wholesale capability.

Mercurio, who specialises in medical malpractice, has more than 10 years of experience in the insurance industry and has previously worked for Willis.

Howden UK chief executive Tim Coles said: “There’s great potential in the medical malpractice arena.

“Having a specialist capability located in the London office will provide our international offices with access to first class insurance, knowledge and contacts to exploit the potential.”

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
