Advanced drivers’ cheap insurance at 19 instead of 21

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has cut the age it will offer cheaper car insurance to those who have completed its Skills for Life programme from 21 to 19.

The IAM insurance is provided by Belfast broker Adelaide Insurance.

From this month IAM Advanced Drivers aged 19 or over driving a low-grouped car can benefit from reduced car insurance.

Improved standards

Simon Best, IAM Chief Executive, said: “The insurance industry has been quick to penalise young drivers, but is much slower to do anything to help improve their driving standards.

“By introducing a financial incentive, IAM Surety is going some way towards improving young drivers’ skills and behaviour on the road, and investing in their driver education at a time when they need it most.”

The IAM Skill For Life advanced driving programme costs £139. Driver s also have to pay the IAM annual membership fee of £30.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
