New figures released by the RAC show a marked increase in the overall costs of owning a car with higher insurance prices contributing to the rise.
The report, "Cost of Motoring" index, reveals that owning a car now costs more than £5,500 a year.
According to the report, average insurance premiums on a motor vehicle have risen from £389 to £412, an increase of 6%.
Other factors include fuel price increases, maintenance charge hikes and the introduction of congestion charges.
