Prudential has struck a deal with telecommunication network Vodafone, to provide insurance services over mobile phones using Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) technology.

Initially the deal will provide users with a click-through facility to connect to a Prudential tele-consultant to notify claims and ask about products.

Retail ecommerce manager Andy Lucas, said the move was designed to provide Prudential with an entry into WAP technology. The company's ultimate aim is to allow customers to obtain quotes and lodge claims over their mobile phones.

Lucas said: "At least 1.5 million of our existing customers own mobile phones, and initiatives like this will provide people with more choice in how they communicate with us."

Last month Cox-backed InsuranceWide.com linked up with BT to allow consumers access to insurance information and even complete purchases online.
