The fireworks that lit the night sky with patriotic celebrations also brought a huge boom in business for insurers.

Industry pundits estimate up to 100,000 golden jubilee celebrations will be covered by the end of the summer.

There were an estimated 4,000 official street parties over the holiday weekend, with many more local celebrations and evening bashes.

Other events are due to be held over the rest of the summer.

Insurance broker, Events Insurance, has doubled its staff and banked three times its best-ever takings.

"We're struggling to cope with demand," managing director Lucy Scurlock-Jones said.

"The millennium was a complete flop compared to this. I've never seen anything like it."

The company had sold 20,000 policies for jubilee events. Street parties accounted for nearly all the policies, but many covered firework displays and other events.

Scurlock-Jones said her company was "barely scratching the surface" of demand and predicted there would be at least 100,000 parties.

The most patriotic parts of the country include London suburbs, Essex and the Westcountry, according to the Hampshire-based broker.

By contrast, there had been less interest from north of the border.

"We haven't noticed an awful lot from Scotland," Scurlock-Jones said. "A lot of it is from inner cities and from Essex, suburban London and the Westcountry."

Based on her company's sales to official and non-official events, the most patriotic town in the country was Chelmsford in Essex.

Local authority insurer Zurich Municipal also reported doing more jubilee business in the South East, with four times as many inquiries about public liability cover than any other region.

Official figures show that there were: 30 jubilee celebrations in Chelmsford; 39 in the Royal Borough of Maidenhead and Windsor, home to Windsor Castle; and 19 in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, home to Kensington Palace.

The City of Westminster, which includes both Buckingham Palace and St James Palace, planned on hosting 40 street parties.
