Liberty International Underwriters has opened a new office in Spain as part of a European expansion

Liberty International Underwriters (LIU), a division of insurer Liberty Mutual Group, has opened an office in Spain as part of its continuing continental European growth strategy.

The new branch, in Madrid, will be headed by Fernando Lara and will initially focus on directors & officers, financial institutions and professional indemnity with other products being introduced in the future, the company said.

Commenting on the launch, LIU Europe’s chief executive, Sean Rocks said: “We have been writing Spanish business for some time now under the E.U. passporting licence, but in order to achieve our expansion plans, we need to give local brokers a local presence.

“Fernando has many years’ experience in the industry and the team we have in place in Madrid has a combination of technical skills and local knowledge. This means that brokers in Spain will enjoy the same level of service that brokers in the UK and other European countries do where we have a local presence.”

LIU Europe provides specialty insurance products for large and medium sized companies and professional organisations throughout its branches in Europe.

It writes other products such as general liability and energy for the Spanish market through its London office and will seek to expand such capability to Spain in the future.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
