Liberty International Underwriters (LIU), a division of leading global insurer Liberty Mutual Group, has appointed Paul Kurgo as Head of Commercial UK and Ireland. Kurgo’s role, which he takes up from 11 February 2008, will see him assume responsibility for Liberty’s UK commercial and Irish operations, focusing particularly on the management of existing operations in Bristol, Manchester and Dublin and developing and implementing strategy to profitably grow LIU’s commercial presence.

Reporting to Sean Rocks, chief executive of LIU in Europe, Kurgo joins from QBE where he spent six years. Latterly he was general manager of QBE’s UK commercial division with additional responsibility for bloodstock, product protection, extended warranty and a new trade credit operation. Prior to QBE, Kurgo held roles with HSB Engineering Insurance Ltd, Hansa Industrial Insurance Ltd and Factory Mutual International.

Rocks said: “We are committed to expanding our regional and commercial business. The appointment of Paul Kurgo, with his extensive experience in this area, recognises the different challenges this sector brings in comparison to the London market, and I am confident that his appointment will ensure we deliver on our regional commercial strategy.”

Kurgo added: “It is a good time to be joining Liberty. The business is forging strong regional broker relationships to drive the distribution of its market leading products and I am looking forward to the challenge of accelerating the growth of Liberty’s UK and Ireland business.”
