Medico-legal reports do not offer value for money, according to Norwich Union (NU).

Former claims director David Hooker, speaking on his retirement from the insurer, said that NU had conducted a survey of hundreds of medical reports that it received as part of the personal injury claims process.

He said: "We found only about 5% of these reports offered any value for money. Many of them are just going through the motions and are seen to be just a routine part of the personal injury claim transaction."

NU is campaigning to change the way that personal injury claims are handled in the UK and wants to remove parts of the process that are purely transactional without adding value. Hooker suggested that in many cases, rather than using consultants, GPs reports could be used.
