Should car insurance apply to the vehicle rather than the individuals? MPs to debate today after petition reaches 56,000 signatures

MPs are going to debate a potential rule change to car insurance after a campaign petition reached over 56,000 signatures.

At 4:30 pm today, MPs will debate whether the UK should adopt a system similar to Portugal and the USA and insure the vehicle rather than the individual.

The debate will be led by Susan Elan Jones MP, a member of the Petitions Committee. The debate does not have a fixed start time, but will follow the petition debate on British Sign Language which starts at 4.30pm.

The government response states that it has “no plans to change the motor insurance system to require vehicles themselves, rather than the use of a vehicle, to be insured”.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
