Barrister Elizabeth Bramwell has been appointed the new executive director of the Forum of Insurance Lawyers (FOIL), which represents 1,500 defendant solicitors.

She replaces Sue Bucknall, who is now director of the Solicitors' Pro Bono group, which provides free legal advice.

Before her new appointment, Bramwell worked in legal publishing as a director at textbook firm, Sweet & Maxwell, and was editor of the Law Society Gazette for six years.

She said: "In future FOIL will be running roadshows on mediation and alternative dispute resolution as a way of resolving cases without going to court. We will be inviting claims managers along to discuss this process."

She also said she would be collaborating with the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers to improve the workings of the civil court process.
