The international firm’s new operations will be piloted by CFC’s former cyber team lead

Small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) cyber insurance provider Cowbell has snapped up CFC’s Simon Hughes to lead its new UK operations, which have launched today (4 April 2023).

Cowbell was founded in 2019 and is headquartered in the US – it has employees across the US, Canada, India and now in London.

Hughes will bring around 13 years of experience to the role, having begun his career at Jubilee Managing Agency in 2011.

He then went on to work as an assistant underwriter at SOVAG Insurance Company before taking up a role at CFC as cyber team leader.

In his new role, he will serve as general manager at Cowbell UK.

Speaking exclusively to Insurance Times, Hughes said that he is “looking forward to delivering a really innovate product to SME business”, which he believes will “protect them from the number one issue SME businesses face today – their cyber exposure”.

Hughes also stated that he will be “re-establishing” his existing relationships with UK and regional brokers to set up a distribution network.

He said: “We will be partnering with regional and national brokers to offer SMEs exactly what they need to help protect their businesses using our tried and tested approach, which has produced excellent outcomes for businesses in the US.

“I’m really excited to be working with SME business in the UK and to introduce Cowbell’s risk pool and data-driven underwriting expertise to the UK market.”

Cowbell expects to announce the availability of its product by mid-2023.

In addition to insurance cover, the product will include access to Cowbell’s risk engineering team, who will provide advice and services on how to lessen cyber risk and improve cyber posture.

Cowbell is currently recruiting staff for its UK operations.
