Chris Pearce, chief data and AI officer at Ageas UK, explains his firm’s entry to the Excellence in AI category
Why did you put yourselves forward for the category?

We entered this category because we see artificial intelligence (AI) as much more than a technology programme.
It’s helping us rethink how we serve customers, support our people and run the business.
We’ve taken a deliberate approach, combining predictive and generative capabilities with human judgement rather than replacing it.
Over the past year we’ve embedded generative and agentic AI across pricing, fraud, claims and customer service, always with clear governance and measurable outcomes.
Our entry at the Insurance Times Awards gives us the opportunity to show how AI delivers real value when deployed responsibly and at scale.
What do you think makes your entry stand out and why should you win the award?
What makes our approach different is that we don’t deploy AI for its own sake.
Every use case is designed, built, developed, tested, measured and evaluated hand-in-hand with business teams against the impact it delivers for customers, colleagues and the business.
Importantly, we’ve built much of our capability in-house, giving us greater control and sovereignty over evolution of our services and allowing us to combine technical expertise with a deep understanding of our customers.
The results speak for themselves through improved fraud detection, improved customer journeys and sentiment, faster claims handling, better support for vulnerable customers and significant business benefit from predictive AI initiatives alone.
What would winning this award mean to you and your firm?
Winning would be a fantastic recognition of the work our teams have put in to making AI practical, responsible and valuable.
This isn’t the achievement of a single team – it’s the result of collaboration across data, technology, operations, claims, pricing and customer functions.
To be recognised by our industry would be a proud moment and a validation of our belief that the best outcomes come from combining AI with human expertise and judgement.
