Robert Leigh, chief executive at Got You Covered, explains his firm’s entry for the Diversity and Inclusion Excellence category
Why did you put yourselves forward for the category?

We put ourselves forward because, as we’ve grown Got You Covered, I’ve always believed that opportunity should be based on what somebody can bring to the business and what they can become within it. Inclusion isn’t something I see as a separate initiative or a box to tick.
It should be reflected in the decisions we make every day, from who we recruit and how we develop people to who gets the opportunity to progress. We’re proud of the progress we’ve made and entering the award gave us an opportunity to share that approach.
What do you think makes your entry stand out and why should you win the award?
For me, what makes our approach different is that it’s practical. We want inclusion to influence how we actually run the business, rather than simply what we say in a policy. As chief executive, I want people to know that if they have the ability, attitude and ambition to progress, there is an opportunity for them here.
That means continually looking at how we recruit, develop, lead and support our people, challenging ourselves when something could be better and taking action. We certainly don’t claim to have finished the job, but we are committed to continually improving.
What would winning this award mean to you and your firm?
I’d be incredibly proud because this wouldn’t be an award for one individual or one initiative. It would recognise the collective effort of people across Got You Covered to create a business where people have a fair opportunity to succeed.
As chief executive, something I care deeply about is ensuring that as the company grows, our people can grow with it. Winning would be fantastic recognition of how far we’ve come, but more importantly it would strengthen our determination to keep improving and to build a business where talented people can develop, contribute and progress.
