Michael Pepper, head of engineering at Superscript, explains his firm’s entry to the Excellence in AI category
1. Why did you put yourselves forward for the category?

We entered Excellence in AI because we believe our approach reflects responsible, practical AI adoption.
At Superscript, AI isn’t about replacing human insurance expertise.
It’s about giving our people more capacity to focus on the work where their judgement, knowledge and relationships matter most.
We’ve embedded AI across areas including engineering, product and SME broking with measurable results in productivity and quality.
Just as importantly, we test where AI adds genuine value and are prepared to stop when the evidence tells us it doesn’t.
2. What do you think makes your entry stand out and why should you win the award?
Our combination of ambition and discipline is what makes our entry stand out.
AI is now firmly embedded in everyday working life at Superscript, particularly across our product and engineering teams, where it plays a significant role in how we develop, test and improve our technology.
We’re already seeing meaningful returns through increased engineering capacity and greater efficiency.
But adoption isn’t the goal in itself.
We’ve used AI to strengthen quality, accelerate learning and support colleagues, while controlled testing has also helped us identify where AI doesn’t improve the customer experience, allowing us to make informed decisions about where to invest.
3. What would winning this award mean to you and your firm?
Winning would be meaningful recognition of the work our teams have done to turn AI from an emerging technology into something that creates practical value across Superscript.
It would particularly recognise the thoughtful way our people are approaching it – experimenting, measuring results, sharing what works and maintaining human judgement where it matters.
We’re still relatively early in what AI can enable for insurance, so the award would give us confidence that we’re building on the right foundations as we move carefully from internal productivity towards applications that can create even greater value for customers.
