Brokers' worries over their phone bills after long calls to insurers have prompted one carrier to bear some of the cost itself.

NIG has introduced local rate numbers for brokers calling its customer service and claims lines.

The insurer said the idea sprang directly out of brokers' comments.

It will send brokers a leaflet containing the new numbers and explaining how they can interrupt the recorded message to get through to the appropriate part of NIG's system.

The company said the move demonstrated NIG's commitment to the broker channel.
