One in eight UK adults will become the victim of a stalker, claimed Chubb Insurance as it published new research on the problem.

The findings have prompted an urgent review of the stalking cover it provides as part of its Masterpiece product for high net worth clients.

Up to 45% of stalking episodes include violence, and 40% of victims are forced to move either home or job, said the insurer.

Chubb's European head of personal lines John Sims said he had ordered a review of the product's provisions for psychological harm and counselling.

"This is something that no insurers currently cater for," said Sims. "That's a gap in protection we want to close as soon as possible for our clients."
